Adjunct Professor of Law
Joseph has over 14 years of legal experience advising companies in Asia on all aspects of their business and corporate governance and working with general partners and limited partners in venture capital and private equity funds on matters spanning the entire fund cycle. His activities ranged from helping two founders enter into various alliance and merger transactions that lead to its growth and listing on Nasdaq to forming a China focused growth fund for a major Asian institution and advising that fund on portfolio investments, including those in clean technology and health care in China.
In addition to developing a practice around the venture capital and private equity fund cycle, for most of his years in Asia, from 1997 to 2008, Joseph was instrumental in the business side of operating a law firm, growing a San Francisco-based law firm, Heller Ehrman, from four lawyers in two cities to more than 30 in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. He was resident in all four offices over the years and was an Equity Partner, Head of the Asian Private Equity Practice, Chief Representative of the Beijing office, and a Member of the Asia Operating Committee. In 2008, Joseph joined New York-based Proskauer Rose as an Equity Partner to help establish their first Asian presence in Hong Kong, to head the Beijing office, and to develop its Private Investment Funds practice in Asia.
From 2000 to 2001, Joseph took leave from Heller Ehrman to become the sole Portfolio Maintenance Attorney at Intel Capital. He led portfolio maintenance matters for over 90 companies, approximately a third of which were located in China, and also had responsibility for investments in Korea, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and Australia. During this period, Joseph and Cadol and worked together on a number of portfolio maintenance transactions, including the sale of Sharkwave to Tom.com and transactions related to Intel Capital’s investment in PCCW.
As an angel investor, Joseph invested in One Tree Pictures Ltd., a start-up production house in Hong Kong (its first movie, Beautyworld, recently won an Award of Merit at the Accolade Film Festival), and iXiGO.com, a leading travel aggregator in India. For many years Joseph served as a Judge and Mentor of the Start-Up Singapore Business Plan Competition hosted by the National University of Singapore. He has a Masters in Law from New York University School of Law, a Juris Doctor from Whittier Law School, and a BA from SUNY Albany’s Rockefeller School of Public Policy.
