Whittier Law School participates in an International Law Competition yearly called the Jessup International Moot Court Competition. This year Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon held the Pacific Regional round. Team members were Andrea Navarro, Bryan Berman, Kelsey McKeever, Stefan Ghaemi and Cynthia Underwood.
This year, both our brief scores and our oral argument scores were the highest we have received in the past three years we have been competing at Jessup. Ms. McKeever and Mr. Ghaemi won their round against the Berkeley team, and Mr. Ghaemi received the best oralist award for the same round. In another round, our brief received a notably higher score than that of University of Washington.
We also had the opportunity to experience the true meaning of this international moot court competition- the national Jessup competition in Afghanistan had to be postponed when the competition hotel was the site of a suicide bombing. In an effort to show support for the impressive and humbling efforts of students in the Afghani competition, the Jessup organizers invited all the competitors in the Pacific Region Rounds to sign a banner and have their picture taken with it. Our students were among the first to sign the banner with messages of camaraderie. They were also at the very front line of the group picture, holding up the banner. The picture and the banner was mailed to the Afghani students that evening.
