Children’s Rights Clinic

Carlos (not his real name) was born in Mexico. Carlos’ father beat and abandoned him. When he was a small child he begged and sold trinkets to support his mother and siblings. By the age of 14, Carlos was homeless, slept on the street and dug in trash for things to sell for food. Because of the special circumstances of abuse, neglect and abandonment, third-year law students Marty Chao and Alvin Sandjaya, working with Professor Jeanne Thomas, were able to help Carlos obtain a Special Immigrant Juvenile Status guardianship order which was later filed in immigration court.
