Whittier First-Year Students Compete in Oral Advocacy Competition

This month, Whittier Law School held the 12th Annual Susan E. McGuigan Oral Advocacy Competition for Whittier Law first-year students. More than 140 students worked all semester preparing for the competition, which involved an appellate brief problem that was grounded in federal constitutional law and the right of publicity.

The competition was coordinated by Professor Kelley Mauerman, the Assistant Director of the Lawyering Skills Institute. The final round was judged by Professor Patricia Leary, Professor Kelley Poleynard, and former Professor and Dean of Student Services Susan McGuigan. A group of 20 faculty, staff and alumni judged other rounds.

According to Professor Mauerman, “We were fortunate to have Whittier Law faculty and alumni participate as judges, and the students received many hours of coaching from our Moot Court Honors Board members in advance of the competition. Several judges commented that the quality of the students’ oral advocacy skills this year was outstanding.”
