2013 Professor of the Year: J. Denny Haythorn


Dean Haythorn joined Whittier College School of Law in 1976 as the Director of the Law Library. He is now the Associate Dean for Library and Information Services as well as a tenured Professor of Law. In addition, he has served as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs; the Director of the Summer Programs in Spain and France; the School’s negotiator for agreement between Whittier and Nanjing University for the summer program; and Director of the Irvine campus during the move to Costa Mesa. He teaches Administrative Law, Admiralty Law, Aviation Law, Advanced Legal Bibliography, Agency and Partnership Law, Business Associations, Conflicts of Law, and Legal Skills.

Dean Haythorn is from Chicago and has a BA in History from DePauw University, an MA in History from Chapman University, a JD from Seattle University Law School and a Masters in Law Librarianship from the University of Washington. He was on active duty with the Air Force and then with the Air Force reserves, retiring as Lt. Colonel. Dean Haythorn has been a Visiting Associate Professor at UCLA’s Information School and presently is on the Board of the UCI Paralegal Program. He was the Commodore of the California Yacht Club in 2000 and regularly sails and manages sailing races for the Club. He is married to Lori Johnson and they have two adult sons, Samuel and Alexander.
