Adjunct Professor of Law
Honorable Thomas Goethals is a Superior Court judge sitting in Orange County and currently assigned to long cause criminal trials. He was previously the supervisor of all felony trial courts in Orange County. Judge Goethals graduated from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles in 1977, and immediately went to work as a deputy district attorney for the Orange County District Attorney. During his twelve years in that office, he tried over 150 jury trials, and supervised both the homicide and law and motion units.
In 1990 Judge Goethals left the DA’s office for private practice. Until his appointment to the bench in 2002, he was a partner at the law firm of Pohlson, Moorhead and Goethals where he tried both civil and criminal matters.
Since 1998, Judge Goethals has been an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School. In recent years he has also regularly taught his fellow judges through the CJER program.
