Shoshanna Chagall Gungur ‘10

What do you do?
As the Chief Operations Officer at RETECH Engineering, Inc., I’m directly involved in overseeing the execution of power generation plant projects in the US and around the world. I manage a team of engineers, financial analysts, and project managers etc. and we work together on developing commercial scale plants in areas ranging from waste to energy, hydropower, wind power, solar thermal, solar PV, hydrogen fuel, waste water treatment and desalination technologies etc. The energy-related assignments I’ve helped implement are spread in countries including the U.S., Haiti, India, UAE, Jordan, Israel, Canada, Bangladesh and Ghana, among others. This involves developing projects for multilateral organizations as well as U.S. and foreign governments. I’m also faculty at Loma Linda University teaching graduate classes in topics such as Strategic Planning, Organizational Behavior, and Professional Ethics.

What excites you most about your job?
Making a positive difference in the environment while progressing the economy forward is my favorite facet on the job. My propensity towards science and technology is constantly engaged when offering technical oversight of prototype developments of renewable technologies. Aiding an inventor’s technology get transformed into a working plant by essentially being part of the project from inception to implementation can be compared to going through gestation and seeing a baby being born. It is a superbly rewarding experience.

How did your experience at Whittier Law School prepare you for this job?
It wasn’t just the academics but the entire experience of procuring a JD at Whittier Law School that helped reinforce my core skillset. The wonderful support system and an in depth curriculum fostered strong analytical thinking and critical judgment that are crucial when making decisions at my job. The professional camaraderie that I found here has definitely honed my interpersonal skills and helps me lead my team better.

Do you have any advice for those seeking employment in your industry?
Engage in internships while pursuing your legal education that help build on qualitative experience in successfully operating aspects of a business entity. Being involved in Intellectual Law, Environmental Law societies and keeping abreast of the emerging, cutting edge ideas in those particular fields while also retaining knowledge of the tried and tested scientific concepts can help one prepare for the energy industry. Also, learn to enjoy reading patents and contracts.
