“I’m so glad that I could have the chance to attend the Sexual Orientation Law program offered by the Whittier Law School this summer. The organizing work of academic program is awesome, the faculty is super awesome and the courses I have chosen are super super awesome! Although the American legal system is so sophisticated and exquisite, I have still managed to survive. I especially love Prof. Chang’s and Prof. Nice’s courses, from the very bottom of my heart. I would say that Prof. Chang’s lecturing is more insightful and brain-consuming while Prof. Nice’s style is more of inspiring and enlightening character.

“P.S. Barcelona is such a gay city!”

“The Barcelona study abroad program is phenomenal. The courses are intellectually stimulating and the faculty is passionate about their areas of expertise. Keeping up with the course requirements and submerging in Spanish culture is manageable. I cannot imagine a better program in which to have spent my summer abroad.”

“A fast-paced, knowledge-packed whirlwind of a good time is what comes to mind as I reminisce of my time during the Sexual Orientation Program in Barcelona, Spain. As a Florida student, I have read many cases that originate in California, especially those dealing with gay rights. I never imagined a professor that argued a case before the California Supreme Court, would teach one of my courses. Nor did I imagine learning from a world renowned ‘right to relate’ theorist. I have learned a plethora of views, case law, and methods of advocacy for human rights, specifically gay rights. The city is beautiful, fortunately the program ‘field trips’ complement learning and enjoying the area. My only criticism is that the program only lasted one month!! However, I was grateful for the opportunity.”

“Whittier Law School’s Barcelona study abroad program has been one of the greatest experiences of my life! The faculty and courses this program places together in this Catalonian city are of a very high caliber. Dean Peeler and Professor Chang gave excellent lectures on Community Property and Sexuality, Gender, & Displacement, their knowledge and style are second to none. Both of these professors also took us to see the law in action in Barcelona, from guided court tours to volunteer political organizations helping Spain’s LBGT community. Besides all this I was able to enjoy a lot of free time. I enjoyed the beautiful beaches of La Barceloneta, experienced the very loud and vibrant nightlife, and walked Las Ramblas where we ate tapas, drank sangria and just took it all in. I came to this summer program not knowing anybody but leave with fond memories, new friends and a deeper understanding of the law. I highly recommend this study abroad program to all.”

“As a student seeking the International and Comparative Law certificate, I decided to participate in the Barcelona program in order to meet certificate requirements and for the cultural experience. However, being given the opportunity to take courses that deal with the LGBT community and the law has sparked an interest in a new area of family law that I had yet to be exposed to. I am now able to see the various issues that arise in family law when dealing with same-sex couples, as well as understand the difficulties that non-traditional families encounter. Apart from being a city with a wonderful culture and history, Barcelona is, in my opinion, one of the most suitable places for this program to take place in since its people seem to truly support and embrace the LGBT community. This program has enriched me as an individual and a student. At the end of the day, I not only take with me great memories, new friends, and a part of Spain in my heart… but also a new perspective on the LGBT community.”

“As a Center for Children’s Rights Fellow, I am so grateful for the opportunity to have studied and lived in Spain. This program has been more than just classes for credits and became a life experience that I will never forget. I learned about the dynamics of LGBT youth and how it affects family and juvenile law, and just how underrepresented a lot of LGBT issues really are. Having studied in Spain — an extremely forward country on the LGBT front — has opened my eyes on just how complex this area of law really is. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and I feel confident that I can take the classroom skills and life experiences here and apply them back home.”
