Whittier Law School Study Abroad Program - Spain

Study Law and Sexuality in Beautiful Barcelona

Offered in collaboration with the Williams Institute of UCLA Law School, this program is the only summer law program devoted to law and policy issues relating to the LGBT community. Spain is among very few nation states that recognize same-sex marriage, and Barcelona has a very large, active and visible LGBT community.

Barcelona is one of Europe’s most popular cities, known for its art, Gaudi architecture and beautiful beaches. Located on the Mediterranean Sea at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains and 40 minutes by train from Sitges, a popular gay resort, it is the capital of Catalunya, Spain’s most politically progressive community.

Reasons to Study Abroad in Barcelona

  • Sexual Orientation focus. This is the only summer law program focusing on law and policy issues regarding the LGBT community.
  • Stunning setting. Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in the world, with exceptional dining, sights, nightlife, and beaches.
  • Art and architecture. The city is visual treasure, with medieval buildings in the Gothic Quarter coexisting with modern architecture. Numerous museums feature art from Romanesque to modern day works.
  • Exceptional Faculty. Students study with internationally known faculty from the United States, the University of Barcelona, and around the globe.
  • Nearby Sights. Aside from the myriad sights in Barcelona, there is easy access to France and other popular sites in Spain, including Madrid, the nation’s capitol, Sitges, and the gateway to Ibiza in the Balaeric Islands, also known for its beaches, nightspots, and gay friendliness.

"Having studied in Spain -- an extremely forward country on the LGBT front -- has opened my eyes on just how complex this area of law really is."

— Dominique Sanchez, Whittier Law School
