Maryland Volunteer Legal Services Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law) at Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) Attorney, Maureen van Stone, recently won a great victory for her two-year-old client, Migel Sanchez, in a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits case. When Maureen first met Migel in the summer of 2008, he was only 10-months old. He had already been diagnosed with lumbar spina bifida (a birth defect in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close) with hydrocephalus (a build up of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling); he had an emergency shunt placed in his head to treat the hydrocephalus; and he suffered from significant gross motor, fine motor, cognitive, and another developmental delays.
