Moot
Court
Moot Court Honors Board is a student-run
honors organization which provides its members with the opportunity
to develop their oral and written appellate advocacy skills.
Students who have demonstrated exceptional appellate advocacy
skills are invited to join MCHB. Members compete in several
national competitions each year with varied subject matters
in cities as close as San Diego and as far away as New York
and Chicago.
MCHB is dedicated to helping its members
achieve their greatest potential in appellate advocacy with
the help of fellow members and distinguished faculty members
as coaches throughout the competition process. Even for those
students that may not want to pursue a career in appellate
advocacy, MCHB still offers you invaluable experience to develop
your oral and written skills which will serve you well in
any field. Members are also eligible to receive academic credit
for their involvement on MCHB.
In collaboration with the Center for Children’s
Rights, the Board also hosts an annual national competition
in Juvenile Law.
JOINING MOOT COURT
1. GRADING ON TO MCHB
The Institute for Legal Writing holds the
Susan G. McGuigan Oral Advocacy Competition near the end of
each Legal Writing II course. All semi-finalists in this competition
who compete to make it to the finals and receive an 85 or
higher overall in Legal Writing I and II are invited to grade
on to MCHB.
2. COMPETING ON TO MCHB
In addition to those that are invited to
grade on, we hold the Sonnenberg Competition each Fall where
all students who have completed Legal Writing I and II have
a chance to gain membership, provided they are in good academic
standing. Students who are invited to join will be eligible
to receive an academic unit for their efforts during the competition.
