Admissions Policy for Summer Abroad Programs

Whittier Law School will exercise complete discretion to select applicants for its summer abroad programs who demonstrate an ability to live and study in a foreign environment as well as a commitment to participate fully in the academic and cultural programs designed by the program directors. The Law School seeks program participants who will serve as exceptional ambassadors of Whittier Law School in the host country and reserves the right to deny admission to any applicant who does not satisfy its summer abroad admission criteria.

Students from around the country can choose to study:

The curriculum for each program will include, among others, courses on international and comparative law, specialty courses on U.S. legal issues and courses focusing on the law of the host country or area.

Associate Dean Calvin D. Peeler is the stateside director. Dean Peeler is responsible for the planning and overall administration of the summer programs. You can reach Dean Peeler at summerabroad@law.whittier.edu or 714-444-4141 ext 111. All general inquiries may be directed to the Stateside Director.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS (ALL PROGRAMS)

Admissions is available to students who have completed at least one year of full- or part-time study and are in good standing at any law school that is approved by the American Bar Association or that is state accredited. Students must provide a letter from the Dean of their school verifying that they are in good standing and are eligible to return. Law school graduates and practicing attorneys may attend the programs as auditors.

GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION

Facilities

Facilities in some foreign locations may be different from and/or below standards to which we are accustomed in the U.S. Therefore, persons with special needs and requirements are encouraged to discuss them as soon as possible with the On-site Program Director and prior to registering for the program.

Grading

Students are required to attend and participate actively in all classes. All students receive a course grade based on class participation and required a paper or exam administered at the end of each course. Please be advised that many classes have been designated as seminars and require a paper instead of a final examination. At the discretion of the professor, the due date of the paper may be as late as early August. The acceptance of any credit or grade for courses completed in a Whittier Summer Program by any law school other than Whittier Law School is subject to determination by the home school.

PROGRAM COSTS

In addition to the tuition, program fees, and housing costs (see detailed information for each program), students are responsible for round trip transportation to the program site, food, and other miscellaneous expenses.

Tuition

Look at each program for information regarding the specific tuition for that program. Usually, participants can elect to take a maximum of six (6) units at that price, however some programs may offer fewer courses and units. Please see each program for details. Additionally, tuition covers the costs for all official program activities, i.e. the costs for transportation exursions, class tours organized through the program, etc.

Financial Aid

Students may apply for financial aid for the summer abroad programs. All Whittier Law School students should submit the ‘Summer Intent for Financial Aid’ form to the Office of Financial Aid on or before March 15th for a summer awards package. This form is available in the Office of Financial Aid and serves as an indicator that students want to obtain financial aid for summer programs.

Financial aid for non-Whittier Law School students is processed at a student’s home school. A consortium agreement will be entered between the two law schools, of which a home school will determine the student’s eligibility for financial aid and Whittier Law School will serve as a host school monitoring a student’s enrollment in the abroad program. Non-Whittier Law School students are encouraged to have their home school submit the consortium agreement to our office on or after March 1st at the following address:

Whittier Law School
Office of Financial Aid
3333 Harbor Boulevard
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
Phone: (714) 444-4141 ext. 290
Fax: (714) 444-3458

A minimum enrollment of 4 units is required in order to obtain financial aid for summer, regardless of the enrolled program. Budget varies due to the duration of each program and other related accommodations. Therefore, to obtain a correct budget for traveling, students must indicate the program and units of enrollment they intent to register. Those students who plan to attend more than one program (assuming the dates do not overlap), a recalculation of the budget for multiple programs will be performed. In some cases, airfare receipts are required. A budget for each program will be available to students on March 1st.

As always, cost of attendance for each program includes tuition, application and program activity fees (if applicable), housing, round-trip coach airfare, and a reasonable sum for miscellaneous expenses. It is important to remember financial aid awards do not cover both a student’s fixed local/home living expenses and the abroad program. Arrangements for the fixed expenses are the student’s sole responsibility. In addition, expenses for field trips, before/after traveling lodging, weekend excursions, personal/leisure spending, etc. are not allowed in the budget. Students are encouraged to bring extra money for these expenditures.

Mostly, students will obtain a private loan for summer financial aid. It is advisable for students to apply for the loan early in order to secure a final or official approval of the loan. Please note that all private loans are pre-approved conditionally. Thus, students shall contact and follow up with the lender for a confirmation of the loan. The Office of Financial aid does not apply, guarantee, or approve any type of loans.

Refunds of summer loans (for any program) will be available within five days before the start of the program. Therefore, students are responsible to prepay the airline ticket and other related expenses prior to the program date and/or travel date. Students will then reimburse themselves when the financial aid loan funds arrive. Students are encouraged to plan properly before traveling. If a student cannot pick up his/her refund check, please make arrangements with the Business Office. Non-Whittier Law School students should contact their home school for any information regarding their financial aid loan proceeds.

Payments & Refund

A non-refundable application fee of $50 must accompany all applications in order to be considered for acceptance into the program. The application deadline is March 15, 2008. Late applications will be considered if space is available. Any application submitted and postmarked after March 15 must be accompanied by a $75 non-refundable application fee for consideration. If a late application is not considered, the fee will be refunded. All remaining fees (tuition, program, and housing fees if applicable) are due no later than April 15, 2008. The last day to withdraw and receive a refund will be May 1, 2007. Should a student withdraw from the program by May 1, tuition and housing monies will be refunded, except those fees which are non-refundable. No refunds will be made after May 1. Any student wishing to withdraw and requesting a refund, must submit a Letter of Declaration clearly indicating an intent to withdraw. This letter must be received by the School no later than the May 1 deadline. For timely requests for withdraw, all appropriate tuition and/or fees will be refunded within 10 business days of receipt of a letter of withdrawal. (Please contact Maria Harris at 714-444-4141 ext. 111 for special application instructions for the Israel program.)

Travel

Program participants are entirely responsible for arranging and for payment of all travel to and from the program sites. For all American students, a valid American passport will be required. If you are not an American citizen or are ineligible for an American passport, you should consult with the nearest consulate for information about the necessary travel documents during your stay in the country where your program will take place.

If it does not, you are strongly encouraged to purchase medical and hospital coverage insurance for the period of your stay overseas. Inquire with your medical provider, insurance agent or travel agent about travel insurance that includes medical coverage. Comprehensive travel insurance can be purchased for approximately $100 USD.

Housing Facilities

For specific housing information look at a specific program’s page. Housing facilities in some foreign locations may be different from and/or below standards to which we are accustomed in the U.S. Therefore, persons with special needs and requirements are encouraged to discuss them as soon as possible with the program director and prior to registering for the program. We require you stay in program housing in China. You have the option to choose alternateive housing in all other programs; however, most participants choose the program housing.

Kitchen facilities are available in the program housing in some programs.

Special Accommodations
(Housing, Dietary, Academic, etc.)

Please advise the program director if you require special accommodations with housing, your dietary requirements, or in the academic program.

Spending Money

Students should plan to bring additional money for entertainment, travel and souvenirs. Each program is located in cities with varied nightlife and amusement opportunities. Weekends are free and in the past students have used this time to travel to other cities, towns and neighboring countries.
