Welcome to the Whittier Law School's Center for Intellectual
Property Law (CIPL). Located in Orange County, known by many
as "Silicon Valley South" and home to the world's
tenth largest economy, the Center is near numerous corporate
headquarters, plants, law firms, and entrepreneurs. Whittier
Law School is the only law school in Southern California to
offer a specialized Certificate in Intellectual Property to
its students.
CIPL is committed to offering students an
intellectual property curriculum that fits the needs of the
21st century practitioner. Our courses include the core curriculum
of Trademark, Copyright and Patent Law classes, as well as
stimulating electives providing students with practical experience
concerning intellectual property issues and substantive backgrounds
in the various areas of intellectual property law essential
to the practice of law today.
To facilitate students' understanding of
current intellectual property developments and to provide
opportunities for interaction between members of the local
bar and our students, CIPL hosts an annual series of intellectual
property colloquia. The highlight of the colloquia series
is our Distinguished Speaker presentation. In 2005, we were
honored to host the Honorable Paul R. Michel, Chief Judge
of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Other colloquia speakers have included patent examiners from
the European Patent Office, the former Commissioner of the
United States Patent and Trademark Office, and members of
the California State Bar describing "A Day in the Life
of an Intellectual Property Attorney."
We hope you will seek the opportunity to
get involved and join us in the exploration of the exciting
and evolving world of intellectual property. If you are a
student, the Center offers three main ways to become more
involved: the Fellowship Program; the Intellectual Property
Legal Research and Writing Class; and the Certificate in Intellectual
Property.
