Career Services

Legal career opportunities abound in Southern California's dynamic legal community.

The Whittier Law School Career Services Office provides valuable resources to students beginning in their first year of study and into their attorney careers.

The Career Services Office is involved with bar associations and other organizations to promote the law school. The office is actively involved in the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), the Law School Career Advisors of Southern California (LSCA), the Los Angeles Area Legal Recruitment Association (LAALRA), the Orange County Area Legal Recruitment Association (OCALRA), and Equal Justice Works. Whittier Law School pays membership dues for all Whittier Law School students to the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA), the largest bar association in the local community. Membership allows students to meet with attorneys in specialty practice areas and to learn effective networking skills early in their careers.

Office Resources

The spacious Career Services Office is centrally located on campus. In addition to a comprehensive library of career information, the office offers access to electronic databases. Networked computers, printers, photocopiers, a fax machine, and conference rooms are available at no charge to students and alumni conducting job searches.

Law clerk and attorney opportunities are posted on an online database, allowing both students and alumni to post their resumes and access job listings at their convenience. Law clerk positions, available throughout the year, provide students with income, valuable training, and possible permanent employment offers.

Working with Students and Alumni

The Career Services newsletter provides information on frequent career planning programs, interviewing opportunities and other job-related concerns. First-year students are encouraged to attend informational programs during their first semester of study. The Career Services Office will begin to work with students on an individual basis at the end of their first semester of study.

The staff provides assistance in resume and cover letter preparation, career goal identification, and career strategy development. Students and alumni can sharpen their interviewing skills by participating in mock interviews offered by staff members.

The Career Services Office works with student organizations in organizing speaker events to explore legal specialties, alternative careers, ethnic/gender/age issues, bar examination preparation, and other career topics.

Meeting the Legal Community

Employers are invited to interview students on campus during both the fall and spring semesters. The Career Services Office also hosts the annual Intellectual Property Associate Search, co-sponsored by the ABA schools in Southern California. Through other co-sponsored programs, students have opportunities to interview at Public Interest Career Day and the Government Career Information Day.

The Career Services Office also presents an annual Orange County Law Firm Practice Day and other programs relating to success in solo and small firms. Through the mentor program, students can be matched with graduates or other practicing attorneys who are willing to act as advisors.

Employment Salarly Survey

Every year, the Career Services Office conducts a salary and placement survey of the most recent graduating class 6-9 months after graduation.
